Humor of Bulls and Blunders
The Humor of Bulls and Blunders was published in June 1906 by Small, Maynard & Company. The book comprises hundreds of so-called "Irish Bulls" and English language blunders, compiled by Marshall Brown.
Brown defines "Bull" as "a statement which contradicts itself amusingly, like the Irishman's rope which had only one end, because the other end had been cut away". A Bull is "not a dull absurdity which no one can comprehend; but it is always comprehensibe, even when it is most confused".
Brown said the primary purpose of The Humor of Bulls and Blunders was "to amuse"; but the book also "has an instructive value in suggesting the importance of clearness of expression and simplicity of style".
We are delighted to be able to reproduce selected extracts from this book, under the following headings, for the same purpose as Brown's aim: to amuse and to instruct.
